Chapter 18 - The Aftermath

Six months later, the dust had finally settled on the biggest corporate scandal of the decade. The trial of Vitalis Health dominated the national news networks for weeks. The evidence I provided the FBI was insurmountable.
Richard Vance survived the digitalis overdose, but the neurological damage was absolute. He was confined to a high-security medical facility, completely paralyzed from the neck down, unable to speak, and facing consecutive life sentences for domestic terrorism, illegal human testing, and the murder of multiple patients, including my father. The irony of his punishment was not lost on the public. The man who faked paralysis to orchestrate a massacre was now trapped in a prison of his own flesh.
Miguel and Ethan’s convictions were reaffirmed, and the sprawling Vance estate was seized by the federal government and auctioned off to pay restitution to the families of the victims.
I sat in a small, sunlit café in a coastal town three thousand miles away from the city. I had legally changed my last name back to my maiden name and used my corporate severance package to buy a modest, beautiful house overlooking the ocean.
I took a sip of my black coffee, opening the morning paper. The headline on page four caught my eye: Vitalis Health Assets Liquidated, Proceeds Donated to Medical Ethics Foundation.
I folded the paper, feeling a profound sense of closure. I had not just survived the snake pit; I had burned it to the ground and salted the earth.
A shadow fell over my table. I looked up to see a tall man in a casual linen suit standing across from me. He had kind eyes and a warm, genuine smile. It was Detective Harris, the lead FBI investigator who had coordinated the raid on the penthouse.
"Mind if I sit down, Maya?" he asked politely.
"I thought my involvement in the Vance case was officially closed, Detective," I replied, gesturing to the empty chair.
Harris sat down, taking off his sunglasses. "It is closed. Officially, you were a brave whistleblower who risked everything to expose a sociopath. You are a hero on paper."
"But?" I pressed gently.
May you like
Harris leaned forward, lowering his voice. "The medical report on Richard Vance showed a massive concentration of digitalis in his system. The exact same compound used in the early stages of his lethal Genesis formula. The doctors said it was impossible for him to have accidentally ingested that specific dosage."
I maintained perfectly steady eye contact, my expression neutral and unbothered. "Tragic accidents happen every day, Detective. Sometimes, toxic people just end up poisoning themselves."
