Chapter 9 - The Fury Of A Mother

A hail of gunfire tore through the room, forcing Richard to dive behind a heavy steel medical cabinet. I dropped to the floor, pulling Lily down with me to avoid the crossfire. Through the clearing smoke and pouring sprinkler water, a squad of heavily armed FBI tactical agents swarmed the room. Leading the charge was Sarah, wearing a Kevlar vest over her soaked clothes. She was holding my dropped rifle, her eyes burning with a fierce, uncompromising rage. She had not gone to the hotel in Manhattan like I had instructed her to do. Instead, she had taken the evidence Evelyn had given her and gone straight to the federal authorities. The agents quickly secured the perimeter, shouting commands and disarming the remaining syndicate mercenaries. Richard peeked out from behind the cabinet, raising his weapon to take one final, desperate shot at me. Sarah did not hesitate for a single second. She raised the rifle and fired two precise shots, hitting Richard squarely in the shoulder and the knee. He screamed in agony, dropping his gun and collapsing onto the wet floor in a pool of his own blood. The FBI agents swarmed him immediately, pinning him down and slapping heavy iron cuffs on his wrists. Sarah dropped the rifle and sprinted across the ruined operating theater toward us. She slid to her knees, pulling a small pocket knife to slice through my thick plastic restraints. I pulled both of them into my arms, holding them so tightly I thought my heart might burst. Lily began to stir, groaning softly as the anesthesia started to wear off. She opened her eyes slowly, looking confused at the water falling from the ceiling. She looked at me and smiled groggily, asking if it was raining inside the hospital. I laughed, tears streaming down my face as I kissed her forehead repeatedly. Paramedics rushed into the room, checking Lily's vitals and gently transferring her to a mobile stretcher. I walked over to where Michael lay on the floor, his breathing shallow and ragged. He looked up at Sarah and me with a weak, fading smile. He whispered that we were a good family, and then his eyes closed for the very last time.
