Chapter 3 - The Crimson Harvest

I let go of Sarah and backed away, feeling like the floor was collapsing beneath my feet. I demanded an explanation, shouting that I was not going anywhere until she told me the truth. Sarah collapsed onto the living room sofa, burying her face in her hands. She confessed that Michael never died in that boating accident eight years ago. He had faked his own death because he owed millions to a dangerous underground medical syndicate. They dealt in illegal organ harvesting and experimental genetic treatments for ultra-wealthy clients. I felt a wave of nausea wash over me as the puzzle pieces began to snap together. I asked her what any of this had to do with our innocent seven-year-old daughter. Sarah looked at the floor, unable to meet my eyes as she revealed her darkest secret. She explained that Lily possessed a highly mutated and incredibly rare blood type. Michael had sold Lily's genetic profile to the syndicate to wipe out his massive debts. Evelyn was being paid a fortune to sneak Lily out for minor blood draws while I was traveling on business. The syndicate was using Lily's blood to synthesize a serum that was worth billions on the black market. My blood boiled with a protective rage I had never experienced in my entire life. I told Sarah we were calling the FBI right this second to raid that warehouse. Sarah grabbed my arm, her fingernails digging painfully into my skin. She warned me that the syndicate owned half the judges and police chiefs in the state. If we called the authorities, Lily would simply disappear into the system forever. I pulled out my phone, opening a hidden tracking app I had installed on Evelyn's SUV months ago for security. The blinking red dot on the digital map was no longer at the warehouse. It was moving north at an incredible speed, heading straight for the state border. I realized with horror that Evelyn was not just taking Lily for a blood draw today. The dot on the map abruptly stopped at a private airstrip nestled in the dense woods of upstate New York. A chilling text message popped up on my screen from an unknown number. The message stated that Lily was being relocated for the final bone marrow extraction, and she would not survive it.
