Chapter 1 - The Ghost In

The Alley The heavy steel door creaked open, revealing a face that made the blood in my veins turn to absolute ice. According to my wife, Michael had died in a tragic boating accident exactly eight years ago. I had personally paid for his funeral arrangements and held Sarah in my arms as she wept over his empty casket. Yet here he was, standing in a dirty industrial alleyway in Greenwich, looking completely alive. He was a bit older, with streaks of gray at his temples, but that sharp jawline was unmistakable. I expected Lily to scream or run away from the strange man in the shadows. Instead, my seven-year-old daughter smiled brightly and skipped forward to hug his waist. Evelyn stood nearby, watching them with a cold and calculated expression that I had never seen her wear before. Michael patted Lily on the head and looked up at his former mother-in-law. He asked if the girl was ready for the procedure today. Evelyn nodded, stating coldly that Lily had not eaten breakfast, so her system was perfectly clean. My mind spun in dizzying circles as I tried to process the impossible scene playing out in front of me. What kind of medical procedure were they talking about in a windowless warehouse? I crept closer to the rusted chain-link fence, keeping my head low to avoid detection. The brick building had thick, frosted windows, making it completely impossible to see what was hidden inside. I reached into my tailored suit jacket and pulled out my smartphone, intending to take a video as undeniable proof. I needed Sarah to see this with her own eyes before I confronted Evelyn. Just as my thumb hovered over the record button, the screen lit up with an incoming call. It was Sarah. The default ringtone blared loudly, cutting through the eerie silence of the alleyway like a police siren. I fumbled to silence the device, but the damage was already done. Michael's head snapped up instantly, and his dark eyes locked directly onto my hiding spot behind the fence. He reached under his jacket, and the morning sunlight caught the metallic glint of a silver handgun.
