Chapter 10 - The Secret File

The fallout from the raid at the Black Site completely dismantled the Apex Medical syndicate. Richard was indicted on federal charges of kidnapping, illegal human experimentation, and corporate espionage. He would spend the rest of his natural life rotting in a maximum-security prison. Evelyn survived her gunshot wound but was immediately arrested and charged as a co-conspirator. The board of directors at my company was purged, and Marcus was arrested for his role in the betrayal. It took several months of therapy and healing, but our family slowly found peace again. We moved out of Greenwich to a beautiful, quiet estate in the mountains of Colorado. Lily was back to her old self, terrorizing her tutors and feeding our golden retriever forbidden treats under the table. She never remembered the terrifying events in the operating room, and we decided to keep it that way. Sarah and I grew closer than ever, our marriage forged into something unbreakable by the fire we had survived. I was sitting in my new home office, sipping warm coffee and watching the snow fall outside my window. Everything was perfect, and the nightmare was finally over. Then, my private assistant brought in the morning mail, placing a thick, unmarked manila envelope on my desk. There was no return address, only my name printed in neat, block letters. I sliced it open with a letter opener, expecting legal documents from the ongoing federal trials. Instead, I pulled out a single, heavily redacted medical file with the Apex Medical logo printed on the corner. The first page was Lily's blood profile, confirming her rare genetic immunity. My breath hitched in my throat as I flipped to the second page of the document. It was a birth certificate dated exactly eight years ago, bearing Sarah's authentic signature. Pinned to the paper was a handwritten note that made my blood run completely cold. It read, "You saved the girl, David, but we will be in touch very soon regarding your son."
