Chapter 2 - The House Of Lies

I threw myself onto the damp asphalt just as the sound of heavy footsteps rushed toward the fence. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird trying to escape its cage. I scrambled backward on my hands and knees, dragging my expensive suit through the mud and gravel. Michael cursed loudly, his heavy boots kicking the chain-link fence inches from my face. I held my breath, pressing my body flat against the ground under an abandoned delivery truck. Evelyn yelled from the doorway, warning him that they did not have time to chase shadows. Michael hesitated for a agonizing moment before turning around and jogging back into the warehouse. The heavy steel door slammed shut behind him, leaving the alleyway in total silence once again. I waited ten full minutes before I dared to crawl out from under the rusted truck. My hands were shaking violently as I brushed the dirt from my ruined clothes. I ran back to my old Range Rover, my mind flooded with a thousand terrifying questions. I drove back to my estate in Greenwich, breaking every speed limit on the highway. I slammed the brakes in the driveway, leaving the car door wide open as I sprinted up the front steps. I kicked the front door open, yelling my wife's name so loudly it echoed off the marble foyer. Sarah rushed out of the kitchen, dropping a dish towel in pure shock at my disheveled appearance. She asked me what happened and why I had missed my private flight to Chicago. I grabbed her by the shoulders, my voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. I told her I had followed Evelyn and Lily to an industrial park, and that I had seen Michael. Sarah's face turned completely pale, all the color draining from her cheeks in an instant. She did not look confused, and she did not call me crazy. Instead, she covered her mouth with her trembling hands and began to sob uncontrollably. She whispered that I should have never followed them. I demanded to know what was going on and why her dead ex-husband had a gun. Sarah looked up at me with eyes full of absolute despair. She told me that if Michael saw my face, he was going to kill us all tonight.
