Chapter 8 - THE AWAKENING

The next few weeks were a grueling marathon of hope and despair.
With Eleanor behind bars and the corrupt board members indicted by the FBI, Clara had Liam moved to the best private trauma center in the state. She sat by his bed every single day, talking to him, playing his favorite music, and placing tiny baby Hope on his chest so he could feel her heartbeat.
The doctors said brain trauma was unpredictable. They told Clara to prepare for the worst.
On the 28th day, Clara was sitting by the window, exhausted, singing a soft lullaby to Hope.
A sudden, sharp sound cut through the room.
A raspy intake of air.
Clara dropped her book and rushed to the bed. Liam’s fingers were twitching. His eyelids fluttered, fighting against the bright fluorescent lights.
Slowly, painfully, his deep brown eyes opened. They were clouded, confused, but as they focused on Clara’s tear-stained face, a faint spark of recognition ignited.
He tried to speak, but his throat was too dry. Clara quickly gave him a chip of ice.

"You..." Liam whispered, his voice cracking. "You stayed."
Clara leaned down, pressing her forehead against his, sobbing uncontrollably. "I will always stay."
