Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN PROXY

Desperation is a powerful fuel. Clara discharged herself against medical advice. Cradling baby Hope, she snuck out of the hospital through the loading dock.

She took a cab straight to the townhouse she shared with Liam. Eleanor thought she had won because she had money, but Eleanor didn't know Liam the way Clara did. Liam didn't trust his mother's empire.

Clara laid Hope safely in the bassinet and tore the apartment apart. She pulled out drawers, emptied file cabinets, and ripped up the floorboards in Liam’s home office.

Finally, she remembered the day Liam proposed. He had joked about keeping his most precious things hidden in plain sight. Clara ran to the bookshelf and grabbed his favorite childhood copy of The Great Gatsby. She shook it.

A sealed envelope fell to the floor. Inside was a legally binding Medical Power of Attorney and a handwritten will. Liam had signed it six months ago, notarized by his best friend. It named Clara as his sole medical proxy and the sole beneficiary of his personal estate.

Clara gripped the paper. It was the weapon she needed. But as she turned around, the front door of her apartment was kicked open. Two men in dark suits stepped inside.
