Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Ally
The lead mercenary kept his heavy assault rifle aimed perfectly at the center of Maya's back.
He reached up with a gloved hand and completely ripped away the black catering mask covering his face.
Evelyn gasped in pure shock as she instantly recognized the man as David, Liam's highly trusted childhood best friend.
David had spent the last three years secretly working deep undercover within the cartel's violent inner circle.
"Drop the silver pistol right now, Maya, or I will cut you entirely in half," David ordered with a completely deadly tone.
Maya realized she was entirely outgunned and slowly lowered her weapon, tossing it bitterly onto the stage.
David quickly kicked the gun away and tightly secured Maya's hands behind her back with heavy plastic zip ties.
The remaining mercenaries in the room instantly lowered their weapons, revealing that they were actually David's elite tactical team.
Liam immediately rushed to the stage and dropped to his knees beside his unconscious father.
Evelyn sobbed uncontrollably, believing that the love of her life was already completely gone.
"He is not dead, Mom, he is just completely paralyzed," Liam explained quickly, checking his father's steady pulse.
Liam angrily grabbed Maya by the collar of her ruined wedding dress and hauled her roughly to her feet.
He aggressively demanded that she hand over the specific chemical antidote to the deadly neurotoxin immediately.
Maya stared at the paralyzed billionaire on the floor and let out a harsh, completely genuine laugh of confusion.
"I am an elite professional assassin, Liam, I absolutely do not use messy, unpredictable poisons," Maya sneered confidently.
She insisted that she was planning to execute Arthur with a clean gunshot after the money was successfully transferred.
Evelyn stared at the tied woman, a highly sickening realization slowly creeping into her terrified mind.
If the dangerous cartel assassin did not poison the champagne, then someone else in the room had actively tried to murder her husband.
Liam aggressively shook Maya, demanding to know exactly who had hired her syndicate to attack their family today.
Maya smiled a deeply wicked, highly satisfied smile as she looked past Liam toward the terrified crowd of guests.
"I was completely hired by someone sitting very comfortably at your own prestigious family table," Maya revealed loudly.
The entire ballroom gasped as they collectively realized the true mastermind was a trusted member of the billionaire's inner circle.

"Tell them the absolute truth about your massive gambling debts, Uncle Robert," Maya taunted with a wicked grin.
