Chapter 6 - The Fall of the King

The silenced gunshot didn't sound like a movie explosion.

It sounded like a sharp, sickening cough that ripped through the tense hospital air.

I screamed, pounding my fists violently against the locked glass door of the trauma room.

But Michael didn't fall to the floor.

Instead, the massive security guard standing next to Eleanor dropped his weapon and collapsed instantly to his knees.

Blood rapidly bloomed across the shoulder of the guard's tactical vest.

Eleanor shrieked in absolute terror, dropping her umbrella as she spun around to face the ER entrance.

Standing in the sliding doorways were not local corrupt cops, but half a dozen heavily armed FBI agents wearing dark tactical gear.

"Federal agents!" the lead officer roared, leveling an assault rifle directly at Eleanor's remaining men.

"Drop your weapons immediately and get on the ground!"

The remaining two private guards realized instantly that they were completely outgunned.

They carefully placed their handguns on the floor and kicked them away before lying flat on their stomachs.

Eleanor was hyperventilating, her perfectly styled hair falling frantically around her pale face.

"What is the meaning of this?" she shrieked, pointing an accusing finger at the federal agents.

"I am Eleanor Hayes!"

"You have no authority over me in this county!"

A man in a sharp grey suit walked calmly past the tactical team and approached Eleanor.

He flashed a shiny gold FBI badge.

"Actually, Mrs. Hayes, we have federal jurisdiction regarding interstate kidnapping, attempted murder, and massive corporate fraud."

"Your payroll doesn't extend to the federal bureau."

I watched in stunned disbelief through the glass.

Michael slowly unlocked the trauma room door and walked back inside, his hands shaking violently from the adrenaline.

"How?" I whispered, my brain struggling to process the sudden rescue.

Michael looked down at the floor, looking completely exhausted.

"When I was in the car, I didn't just sit there doing nothing."

"I used my phone to send the audio recording of our confrontation to a contact I have at the FBI."

"I also sent them the encrypted location data from the tracker in Noah's shoe."

"I knew my mother was untouchable locally, so I had to trigger a federal response."

He looked up at me, his eyes filled with immense regret.

"I also sent them the files proving I knew about the financial fraud she was committing."

"I incriminated myself, Emma."

"I am going to federal prison too."

Before I could even respond to his massive sacrifice, the deafening screech of a medical alarm pierced the room.

We both spun around to look at Noah's monitors.

The heart rate line on the screen was dropping with terrifying speed.

Sarah Jenkins sprinted back into the room, pushing past the FBI agents.

"He's crashing!" Sarah yelled, grabbing a crash cart from the hallway.

"The arsenic poisoning combined with the severe sepsis is causing multiple organ failure."

"His heart is giving out right now."

I rushed to the side of the bed, grabbing Noah's tiny, freezing hand.

"No, no, no, you stay with me, Noah!" I begged, tears blinding my vision entirely.

"You fought so hard to find me, you cannot give up now!"

Sarah charged the defibrillator paddles, shouting for everyone to stand clear.

Noah's tiny body violently jolted off the mattress as the electric shock hit him.

We all stared breathlessly at the glowing green monitor.

The line remained completely flat, accompanied by a horrifying, continuous tone.

"Charge to fifty joules," Sarah ordered, her voice completely devoid of emotion.

"Clear!"

Another violent jolt shook his fragile frame.

The flatline continued echoing through the silent room, mocking my desperate prayers.

"Emma," Sarah whispered gently, placing a hand on my shaking shoulder.

"He's gone."
