Chapter 10 - The Price of Peace

The paper slipped from my trembling fingers, fluttering silently to the kitchen floor like a dead leaf.

I grabbed the edge of the granite counter, gasping for air as the horrifying realization hit me like a physical blow.

Noah wasn't an only child.

He had a twin sister.

Eleanor hadn't just stolen one baby from me five years ago; she had secretly taken them both and separated them entirely.

My mind raced frantically, trying to piece together the absolute nightmare.

The corrupt doctors at the fertility clinic, the sudden rush to sign the custody papers, Eleanor's bizarre confidence even as her empire crumbled.

She had always kept a powerful backup plan hidden in the shadows.

I ran to the kitchen window, staring desperately into the dense tree line behind our peaceful backyard.

Noah was completely oblivious, rolling playfully in the green grass while the puppy licked his laughing face.

He was safe, he was finally healing, and he was home.

I had fought a brutal, bloody war to get my beautiful son back from the monsters who hurt him.

I had won the ultimate victory and secured our happy ending against impossible odds.

We had the quiet house, the healing hearts, and the bright, limitless future I had always dreamed of.

I swore to myself right then and there that I would absolutely never let anyone take this peace away from us.

I walked over to the kitchen drawer, pulling out the loaded handgun I had legally purchased for home defense after Eleanor's arrest.

I checked the safety, tucked it securely into the waistband of my jeans, and picked up my cell phone.

I quickly dialed the direct emergency number for my contact at the FBI.

"Agent Miller," he answered on the very first ring.

"Miller, we have a massive problem," I said, my voice completely stripped of panic, replaced entirely by cold, maternal fury.

"Eleanor Hayes took a second child."

I walked outside onto the back patio, keeping my eyes locked intensely on the dark woods.

"I'm sending you a photograph right now," I continued, stepping protectively between the tree line and my playing son.

"I want the location of every single hidden property that family owns, and I want it right now."

I was Emma Carter, the woman who had brought down a billionaire empire to save one precious child.

And heaven help whoever was currently holding my daughter.

I ended the phone call and slipped the device into my pocket.

Just as I turned to call Noah inside for his own safety, my phone vibrated with a completely unknown number.

I answered it silently, pressing the speaker tightly to my ear.

A tiny, terrified voice echoed softly through the line, sounding exactly like Noah used to.

"Mommy? Are you coming to get me out of the dark room now?"
