Chapter 2 - The Monster Unveiled

The word hung in the sterile air of the clinic like a death sentence.

Michael crashed against the metal supply cabinet, his chest heaving as he struggled to process the devastating truth.

"My mother?" he choked out, staring wildly at Noah.

"Noah, buddy, did Grandma Eleanor do this to you?"

Noah whimpered and pulled the thin hospital sheet tightly over his face to hide.

I stepped sharply between Michael and the examination cot, shielding my traumatized son.

"Back away from him right now, Michael," I ordered, my voice hard and entirely devoid of sympathy.

"You don't get to play the concerned father after handing him over to a psychopath."

Michael dragged a shaking hand through his dripping wet hair.

"Emma, you have to believe me, I had absolutely no idea she was doing this."

"She told me he was attending a prestigious boarding school in Switzerland for the past two years."

"She sent me beautiful photos of him playing in the snow every single month."

I scoffed loudly, disgusted by his pathetic ignorance.

"Do you know how easy it is to fake a photograph with your kind of money?"

"Your mother has been keeping him locked away somewhere, torturing him while you attended your fancy golf tournaments."

Michael looked violently ill as he stared at the horrible bruises covering Noah's small arms.

"I pay the tuition directly to the Swiss academy," he whispered, almost to himself.

"If he isn't there, where the hell has she been keeping him all this time?"

"I don't care where she kept him," I snapped, grabbing a heavy cast wrap from the counter.

"What matters is that she broke his leg, and he had to collect empty soda bottles just to beg for a doctor who wouldn't tell her."

I pointed an angry finger directly at Michael's chest.

"I am reporting this to Child Protective Services tonight, and I am handing over all the photographic evidence."

Michael grabbed my wrist, his grip desperate but not entirely aggressive.

"Emma, please, you cannot call the local authorities."

"My mother owns the local police chief, the family court judges, and half the CPS board."

"If you make a formal report tonight, they will tip her off, and she will make Noah disappear completely."

I yanked my arm away, glaring at him with pure hatred.

"Then what exactly do you suggest we do, Michael?"

"Just hand him back to the woman who burns him with cigarettes when he doesn't wash the dishes fast enough?"

Before Michael could formulate an answer, his expensive cell phone began to vibrate violently in his soaked coat pocket.

He pulled it out, and the glowing screen illuminated the dark room with the name "Eleanor Hayes."

We both stared at the vibrating device as if it were a live grenade waiting to explode.

Michael swallowed hard and answered the call, putting it entirely on speakerphone so I could hear.

"Hello, Mother," he said, desperately trying to keep his voice steady.

"Michael, darling," Eleanor's cold, aristocratic voice echoed through the tiny clinic.

"There has been a slight security breach at the summer estate this evening."

"It seems one of the groundskeepers left a gate unlatched, and a certain little problem has wandered off into the rain."

Michael closed his eyes tightly, a single tear mixing with the cold rain on his cheek.

"What exactly are you talking about, Mother?"

"Don't play stupid with me, Michael," she snapped, her tone instantly dropping its fake warmth.

"The tracking device implanted in the boy's shoe indicates he is currently at a pathetic little free clinic on the east side of town."

My blood instantly ran ice cold as I looked down at Noah's worn-out sneakers resting by the cot.

"I am three blocks away with a private recovery team," Eleanor continued smoothly.

"If that miserable ex-wife of yours tries to keep him, I will have my men burn her clinic to the ground with both of you inside."
