Chapter 5 - The Devil's Bargain

Eleanor walked into the emergency department with the arrogant confidence of a woman who owned the world.
Her expensive black umbrella dripped rainwater onto the pristine linoleum floor.
The hospital security guard took one look at the three armed men flanking her and wisely retreated toward the nurses' station to call for backup.
"Mother, what have you done?" Michael yelled, pushing past me to stand aggressively between his mother and Noah's trauma room.
"You poisoned him!"
Eleanor sighed dramatically, delicately folding her umbrella.
"Oh, Michael, please lower your voice."
"You are embarrassing yourself in public once again."
"I did what was absolutely necessary to protect the legacy of this family."
I stepped forward, my fists clenched so tightly my fingernails were biting into my palms.
"You are a monster," I hissed, wanting nothing more than to wrap my hands around her throat.
"He is your own grandson."
Eleanor looked at me as if I were a stain on the bottom of her expensive shoes.
"He is a mistake, Emma."
"He is the weak, pathetic byproduct of my son's temporary lapse in judgment with a nobody."
"But unfortunately, the family trust fund dictates that the firstborn male inherits the controlling shares of the entire corporation upon his eighteenth birthday."
"I could not allow a child carrying your inferior, working-class bloodline to eventually rule my empire."
The sheer evil in her calculated words made my stomach churn violently.
"So you locked him away and fed him poison?" Michael demanded, his voice breaking with devastation.
"Why not just kill him instantly if you are truly that evil?"
"Because a sudden, unexplained death would trigger a massive federal investigation," Eleanor explained calmly.
"A tragic, slow decline due to a 'rare blood disease' is much easier to explain to the wealthy board members."
"I have the best private doctors ready to sign his death certificate the moment he finally gives out."
She snapped her manicured fingers, and the three armed men stepped forward simultaneously.
"Now, step aside, both of you."
"We are transferring the boy to my private medical facility immediately."
"Over my dead body," I snarled, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole to use as a weapon.
Sarah Jenkins, the attending doctor, had quietly slipped out the back door of the trauma room.
I knew she was desperately trying to reach the state police, but we needed to buy time.
"That can easily be arranged, Emma," Eleanor threatened, nodding slightly to her lead guard.
The massive man reached inside his tactical vest and pulled out a silenced pistol.
He pointed the dark metal barrel directly at my chest.
"You won't shoot her in a crowded hospital," Michael said, though his voice lacked any real conviction.
"There are cameras everywhere."
"I own the hospital administration, Michael," Eleanor sneered.
"The security footage will show a crazed junkie entering the ER and tragically shooting a heroic doctor."
"Now, move out of the way before I lose my remaining patience."
I prepared myself to charge at the man with the gun.
I was fully ready to die right there if it meant buying Noah even five more minutes of life.
Suddenly, Michael did something I never expected.
He turned his back to the guards and aggressively shoved me hard into the trauma room.
He slammed the heavy glass door shut, locking it firmly from the outside.
I watched in shock through the glass as Michael turned back to face the armed men alone.
He raised his hands slowly in the air.
"Let them go, Mother," Michael demanded, his voice suddenly stripped of all fear.
"If you let Emma and Noah leave right now, I will sign over all my voting rights and my entire share of the trust directly to you."
"You will have complete control of the company forever, no strings attached."
Eleanor tilted her head, her cold eyes calculating the unexpected offer.
"You would give up three billion dollars for this useless woman and a dying child?"
"Yes," Michael said firmly, never breaking eye contact.
"But if you touch either of them, I swear to God, I will spend every penny I have tearing you apart."
Eleanor smiled a terrifying, razor-thin smile.
"A very tempting offer, my foolish son."
"But unfortunately, I prefer to take the money and leave no loose ends alive."
May you like
She nodded to the guard.
The guard slowly raised his weapon and pointed it directly at the back of Michael's head.
