Chapter 5 - The Panic Room

My vision blurred heavily as blood poured warmly down the back of my neck.
Marcus raised the heavy steel baton to deliver a final, fatal strike to my skull.
Clara suddenly threw a heavy bronze statue across the room, striking Marcus squarely in the chest.
The distraction gave me just enough time to roll sideways and kick Marcus hard in the knee.
I scrambled to my feet and grabbed Emily, clutching her tightly against my chest.
I yelled for Clara to follow me as I sprinted down the long, luxurious hallway toward my private office.
Bullets from Marcus's silenced pistol shattered the expensive paintings hanging on the walls right beside us.
We burst into my office and I quickly locked the heavy oak doors behind us.
I pressed a hidden button underneath my mahogany desk, sliding a massive bookshelf aside.
A reinforced steel door opened to reveal the estate's high-tech panic room.
We rushed inside just as Marcus began violently kicking the office doors down.
The heavy steel door of the panic room locked into place, sealing us in total silence.
I slumped against the cold metal wall, trying to stop the bleeding from my severe head wound.
Emily gently reached out and wiped a tear from my cheek with her tiny thumb.
I looked at the bank of security monitors on the wall and watched Victoria pacing angrily in my office.

She pulled out her cell phone and made a call to an unknown number.
I turned the audio feed on just in time to hear Victoria place a five million dollar bounty on my head.
