Chapter 3 - The Toxic Prescription

Doctor Reynolds scrambled backward on the expensive marble floor in absolute panic.

He yelled that the woman was making up insane delusions to ruin his flawless medical reputation.

I looked down at the dropped syringe and noticed the label on the small glass vial.

It was a highly restricted paralytic drug, not a standard psychiatric sedative.

I grabbed the doctor by the collar of his expensive suit and slammed him against the mahogany staircase.

I asked him why he was trying to paralyze a woman he had supposedly never met before.

Victoria suddenly rushed forward and tried to physically pull me off the terrified psychiatrist.

She argued that I was letting a street vagrant destroy our perfectly curated lives.

The homeless woman stood up slowly and introduced herself as Clara.

Clara explained that she used to be the lead pediatric nurse at the private hospital where Emily was treated after the fire.

She claimed that Emily was never selectively mute from psychological trauma.

Clara pointed a dirty finger directly at Doctor Reynolds.

She stated that the doctor had been prescribing Emily a synthetic neurotoxin disguised as daily vitamin drops.

The toxic drops were specifically designed to temporarily paralyze the vocal cords and suppress memory.

I turned slowly to look at Victoria, who was the only person allowed to administer Emily's daily vitamins.

Victoria backed away from me, her eyes darting nervously toward the front door.
