Chapter 4 - The Mercenary Threat

The heavy tactical boots echoed loudly against the concrete stairs as the mercenaries stormed the building.
Clara clutched the heavy evidence folder to her chest, her heart pounding frantically in her ears.
"We cannot stay here, they will kill us both," Clara whispered desperately.
Elena quickly pulled a heavy metal grate off the wall, revealing a narrow, dusty ventilation shaft.
"Crawl through here, it leads directly to the adjacent rooftop," Elena instructed firmly.
Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, entirely unwilling to leave the brave assistant behind.
"Go right now, Clara, I will buy you as much time as I can," Elena ordered, pulling a small handgun from her coat.
Clara scrambled into the dark, incredibly tight shaft just as the apartment door was violently kicked open.
She crawled as fast as her scraped knees would allow while deafening gunshots erupted in the room behind her.
Tears streamed down her face as the gunfire abruptly ceased, leaving a terrifying, heavy silence.
She kicked the exterior grate open and tumbled out onto the freezing, rain-slicked rooftop.
She sprinted across the slippery tar surface, desperate to jump the gap to the next building.
Before she could take the leap, a massive spotlight suddenly illuminated the entire roof.
A heavily armed mercenary stepped out from the shadows of a large air conditioning unit.
He raised a highly advanced tactical rifle and aimed the laser sight directly at Clara's chest.
"Vivi wants the files returned, and she wants you permanently erased," the mercenary sneered.
Clara backed away slowly, completely trapped on the edge of the five-story drop.
She closed her eyes, entirely prepared to jump rather than let Vivi win this twisted game.
Suddenly, a massive figure tackled the mercenary violently to the wet gravel.
The rifle fired wildly into the night sky as the two men engaged in a brutal, bloody fistfight.
The new arrival delivered a devastating punch, knocking the mercenary completely unconscious.
The tall man slowly stood up, breathing heavily as he turned to face a terrified Clara.
It was Marcus, Julian's fiercely loyal head of security, wiping fresh blood from his jaw.

"Julian sent me to find you before Vivi's assassins did," Marcus stated seriously.
Before Clara could thank him, a massive military helicopter rose ominously over the edge of the building, aiming a heavy machine gun directly at them.
