Chapter 9 - The Broken Code

My fingers wrapped tightly around the cold steel grip of the pistol.
My body was moving completely on its own, driven by a deeply embedded neural command I could not fight.
I raised the barrel of the gun and aimed it directly at Julian's unconscious face.
Henderson smiled with deep satisfaction, folding his hands behind his back.
"Execute the target, Elina," Henderson commanded softly.
My finger slowly began to squeeze the heavy trigger.
Suddenly, baby Leo let out a piercing, terrified cry from his spot on the cold concrete floor.
That tiny, vulnerable sound shattered through the electrical programming overriding my brain.
My maternal instincts violently rejected the artificial commands forcing me to become a murderer.
With a massive surge of willpower, I forcefully jerked my wrist to the right.
I pulled the trigger rapidly, sending three bullets directly into the chests of the guards holding me.
Henderson's eyes widened in absolute shock as his perfectly programmed weapon turned against him.
I dove across the floor, grabbing Julian's heavy assault rifle from the ground.
I unleashed a hail of gunfire, forcing Henderson to dive behind the metal workbench for cover.
Julian groaned, slowly regaining consciousness as the deafening sound of bullets echoed off the walls.
"Get up!" I screamed at Julian, firing another burst to keep our enemies pinned down.
Julian staggered to his feet, grabbing Leo and pulling him securely against his chest.
"The service elevator is behind that steel door!" Julian yelled, pointing toward the back of the armory.

We sprinted for the exit, barely escaping as Henderson's men began firing heavy machine guns.
We slammed the elevator grate shut, leaving the burning armory below us as we ascended into the city.
