Chapter 5 - The Inside Man

The security chief did not look angry; he simply looked like a man doing a business transaction.
"Lower the weapon, Marcus," Julian commanded, his voice echoing with absolute authority.
Marcus shook his head, keeping the rifle perfectly steady.
"The rival cartel offered fifty million dollars for the child, Julian," Marcus stated coldly.
"I cannot walk away from that kind of money, even for you."
I clutched little Leo tighter to my chest, backing away until my shoulders hit the cold glass window.
Julian slowly raised his hands, subtly shifting his body to block me from the line of fire.
"You will never make it out of this building alive," Julian warned him.
Marcus smiled, a cruel and hollow expression.
"I disabled the cameras, and my men are already waiting in the lobby," he replied.
He pointed the barrel of the rifle away from Julian and aimed it directly at my chest.
"Hand over the baby, Elina, and I will make your death completely painless," Marcus offered.
Every maternal instinct I never knew I possessed suddenly flared to life inside me.
Without a single conscious thought, my hand dropped to Julian's tactical belt.
I drew a heavy, serrated combat knife from his sheath in a fluid, blindingly fast motion.
I threw the blade across the room with a terrifying, lethal precision.
The knife buried itself deep into Marcus's throat before his finger could even twitch on the trigger.
He dropped the rifle and collapsed to the floor, choking on his own blood.

I stared at my own trembling hands in absolute horror.
I was a waitress, yet my body knew exactly how to execute a highly trained cartel assassin.
