Chapter 2 - The Crossfire

Bullets tore through the air, completely destroying the elegant dining room of Restorante Orelio.
The mafia boss did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.
He grabbed my waist and violently shoved me behind the thick oak wood of the bar.
I curled my body around the baby, shielding his tiny head from the raining glass.
The man pulled a heavy pistol from his waistband and returned fire with terrifying accuracy.
Two of the masked gunmen dropped to the floor, instantly killed by his precise shots.
"Move toward the kitchen!" he yelled over the deafening roar of the gunfire.
I crawled on my hands and knees, clutching the baby tightly against my chest.
The kitchen staff had already fled through the back alley exit.
We burst through the swinging metal doors just as another volley of bullets hit the wall behind us.
A sleek, armored luxury car was idling in the dark alleyway behind the restaurant.
A bodyguard threw the back door open, and the boss shoved me roughly into the leather seat.
He slid in right next to me, slamming the heavy armored door shut.
"Drive to the safe house, right now," he ordered the driver.
The car sped into the night, leaving the burning restaurant far behind us.
I was shaking uncontrollably, tears streaming down my face.
"Please, just let me go home to my apartment," I begged him.
The man reloaded his weapon, his expression completely unreadable.
"Those men were not cartel hitmen looking for me," he said quietly.

He locked his dark eyes onto mine.
"They were professional cleaners, and they were sent to erase you."
