Chapter 6 - The Safe Deposit Box

Julian stared at the dead body on the floor, then looked at me with a completely new level of caution.

"We have to leave before the rest of his men come up the elevator," Julian said, grabbing my arm.

We rushed toward the private emergency stairwell located at the back of the penthouse.

We descended forty flights of stairs in agonizing silence, the heavy weight of my actions crushing my spirit.

We escaped into the subterranean maintenance tunnels that ran beneath the city subway system.

Julian lit a flare, illuminating the damp concrete walls of the abandoned tunnel.

I sat on a rusted pipe, rocking the baby while trying to process the murder I had just committed.

"You move like a ghost, Elina," Julian noted, wrapping a bandage around a cut on his arm.

I reached into the pocket of my blood-stained waitress apron, looking for a tissue.

Instead, my fingers brushed against something hard and metallic sewn deeply into the fabric lining.

I ripped the seam open and pulled out a small, heavy brass key.

Julian took the key from my hand and examined the intricate serial numbers engraved on the metal.

"This is a proprietary key for the most secure offshore bank vault in the city," Julian realized.

He looked at me, his dark eyes filled with absolute confusion.

"I rented that specific vault for Isabella on the day we got married," he whispered.

I stared at the small brass object, realizing it held the answers to my entire existence.

"Then we need to go open it," I said firmly.

Julian shook his head, racking the slide of his pistol.

"We cannot go to the bank, because the people who want you dead are already waiting for us there."
