Chapter 9 - The Long Road Back

Healing is not a singular moment; it is a thousand small choices.

Over the next year, David became a fixture in the estate. He wasn't the arrogant billionaire who expected the world to bend to his will. He was a father who changed diapers, built cribs, and spent hours sitting on the floor reading storybooks.

He learned how Clara liked her coffee. He learned that Lily was terrified of the dark, and Leo loved the sound of the rain. He learned how to listen, truly listen, to the woman he loved.

One evening, after the twins had turned two, they were sitting on the back patio watching the fireflies dance over the lawn.

"I sold the penthouse today," David said quietly, staring out at the grass.

Clara looked at him, surprised. "Why?"

"Because it's a museum of my mistakes," David replied. "I don't want to live in a place that has no memories of you. I bought a small house a few miles from here. So I can be close to you and the kids."

Clara was quiet for a long time. She looked at the man beside her. The arrogance was gone. The coldness was gone. In its place was a man who had been shattered by his own pride and had spent two years carefully gluing the pieces back together just to be worthy of her presence.

She reached out and placed her hand over his.

"Don't buy the house, David," Clara whispered.

He looked at her, his heart dropping, bracing for the final rejection. "Clara, I..."

"There's a guest room down the hall," she smiled softly, tears welling in her eyes. "It's empty. And the twins have been asking why Daddy always has to drive away in the dark."
