Chapter 4 - The Safe Haven

Clara did not forgive him. But she was a mother, and the twins were developing a cough from the damp air of the shelter. For their sake, she agreed to leave.

David didn't take her back to his penthouse. Instead, he drove them to an exclusive, highly secured private estate in the suburbs that he had purchased through a blind LLC that morning. It was fully furnished, stocked with organic groceries, high-end baby formula, and a nursery that looked out over a private garden.

When they walked inside, Clara stood in the foyer, clutching the twins tightly.

"This house is in a trust," David said softly, standing by the front door. "The trust is entirely in your name, Clara. No one can ever evict you. The bank accounts attached to it have enough funds to last three lifetimes. You have twenty-four-hour private security."

Clara looked around the beautiful, warm home. She looked at David, searching for the catch. "What do you want in return?"

"Nothing," David said, his voice breaking. "I want nothing. I am going to leave now. I am going to go back to the city, and I am going to destroy the woman who did this to us. Marcus is stationed at the gate. If you need anything, ask him."

He turned the handle of the front door, forcing himself to walk away from his family.

"David," Clara called out softly.

He stopped, looking back over his shoulder.

"Their names," Clara said quietly, looking down at the sleeping infants. "Leo and Lily."

A bittersweet smile touched David's lips. "They are beautiful, Clara. Just like you."
