Chapter 5 - Playing the Viper

David returned to the penthouse at dawn. He showered, put on a fresh suit, and walked into the dining room where Chloe was sipping a mimosa, looking at wedding invitations.
"Morning, darling," Chloe smiled brightly. "Where were you all night?"
"Corporate emergency," David lied smoothly, pouring himself a cup of coffee. "An overseas merger required my immediate attention. But it's handled now."
Chloe pouted prettily. "Well, you need to focus on our engagement gala this weekend. Three hundred guests, David. The mayor is coming. It has to be absolutely perfect."
"Oh, it will be," David said, taking a sip of his black coffee. "It will be an unforgettable night."
Over the next four days, David moved with the precision of a surgeon. He transferred the vast majority of his liquid assets into the impenetrable trust for Clara and the twins. He secretly liquidated the joint accounts he shared with Chloe. He compiled a massive digital dossier of her crimes—the wire transfers to the actor, the bribes to the security guard, the hospital payoff, and a string of other frauds Marcus had unearthed from her past.
