Chapter 6 - The Setup

The evening of the engagement gala arrived. The grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton was dripping in crystal chandeliers and white orchids. The city's elite—politicians, CEOs, and celebrities—mingled, drinking vintage champagne.

Chloe was in her element. She wore a custom diamond-encrusted gown, clinging to David's arm, posing for the society photographers. She looked at the crowd with greedy, triumphant eyes. She believed she had finally won. She had conquered the billionaire and secured her throne.

"It's time for the toast," Chloe whispered excitedly, pulling David toward the center stage.

The string quartet faded out. The murmur of the crowd quieted as David stepped up to the microphone. The spotlight hit him, blindingly bright.

He looked out over the sea of wealthy faces. He thought of Clara, shivering on the side of a highway, shielding his babies from the dust. The rage he had suppressed for a week finally hardened into pure, unstoppable titanium.

"Thank you all for coming," David's voice echoed through the massive speakers. "Chloe and I are thrilled to have you here to witness this... transition."

Chloe beamed, raising her champagne glass.

"We are gathered here to celebrate the truth," David continued, his tone shifting, growing colder. "A year ago, my marriage to Clara ended under circumstances that I believed were tragic. I believed I was betrayed."

Chloe's smile faltered slightly. She leaned closer. "David, what are you doing?" she hissed under her breath.

He ignored her.
