Chapter 8 - The Charity Gala

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind me, sealing me completely inside the luxurious study.
Michael was sitting behind a massive mahogany desk, sipping casually from a glass of expensive whiskey.
Victoria, his new wife, was standing by the fireplace in a stunning red evening gown.
She smirked at me, her eyes entirely devoid of any human soul or compassion.
"You really are incredibly stupid, Sarah," Victoria mocked.
"I genuinely enjoyed punishing that little brat, and I am going to enjoy breaking his other leg when you are gone."
I stood up, brushing the dirt off my clothes, refusing to show them even an ounce of fear.
"You are a monster, Victoria, and you belong in a cage," I said evenly.
Michael laughed loudly, setting his heavy crystal glass down on the wooden desk.
"Nobody is going to a cage, Sarah," Michael boasted proudly.
"I own the judges, I own the police chief, and I own this entire pathetic city."
He walked around the desk, pulling a small silver pistol from his tuxedo jacket.
"I bribed the courts five years ago to take him from you, and tonight, I am going to kill you in self-defense," he confessed.
He pointed the gun directly at my chest, his finger resting heavily on the trigger.
"Nobody will ever believe a broke, hysterical clinic doctor over a billionaire philanthropist," Michael sneered.
I did not panic, nor did I beg for my life.
Instead, I smiled coldly and pointed toward the heavy oak doors of the study.
"You are right, Michael, they would never just take my word for it," I agreed.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the wireless microphone I had stolen from the catering podium outside.
The green light on the top of the microphone was glowing brightly, indicating it was completely active.
"But they will believe their own ears," I whispered.

The heavy oak doors suddenly burst open, revealing the entire gala of wealthy donors standing in absolute shock.
The local news crews had their heavy cameras pointed directly at Michael, broadcasting his entire confession live on television.
