Chapter 7 - The Lion's Den

The sound of Eleanor's chilling voice sent a violent shockwave of panic through my entire body.

"Where is David?" I demanded, gripping the steering wheel tightly in anger.

Eleanor let out a sharp, aristocratic laugh that made my skin crawl with disgust.

"David has been on the Hayes payroll for six years, Sarah," she revealed proudly.

"He is the one who drafted the papers that stripped you of your maternal rights in the first place."

I felt incredibly foolish for ever trusting a lawyer in this corrupt city.

"Bring the boy to the estate tonight, or I will ensure you spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison," Eleanor threatened.

She hung up the phone, leaving me listening to the dead dial tone in absolute silence.

I realized in that terrible moment that running away was completely useless.

The Hayes family had too much money, too much reach, and too many people in their pockets to simply hide from them.

I had to cut the head off the snake if I ever wanted my son to be safe.

I drove to a small, hidden church on the outskirts of the city where an old priest I trusted lived.

I left Noah safely hidden in the rectory, promising him I would return before morning.

Then, I drove directly into the heart of the wealthy district, heading straight for the Hayes family estate.

Tonight was the night of their highly publicized annual charity gala.

Hundreds of wealthy donors, politicians, and local news crews were gathered at the mansion to celebrate their fake generosity.

I parked a few blocks away and sneaked onto the heavily guarded grounds through the catering entrance.

I grabbed a black serving tray to blend in with the waitstaff and walked directly into the grand ballroom.

The room was blindingly bright, filled with expensive dresses, crystal chandeliers, and the sound of live classical music.

Before I could even take ten steps, three massive security guards in dark suits surrounded me.

They grabbed my arms forcefully and dragged me out of the ballroom before anyone could notice the disturbance.

They threw me through a pair of heavy oak doors into a private, soundproof study and locked me inside.
