Chapter 3 - The Midnight Escape

I knew in that exact moment that I could never let him go back to that house.

I packed a large canvas medical bag with bandages, painkillers, and antibiotics.

I opened the small wall safe in my office and took out all the cash I had saved for emergencies.

It was not much, but it would buy us a few days of freedom.

I wrapped Noah in my warmest winter coat and carried him out the back door of the clinic.

My old, rusted sedan was parked in the dark alleyway.

I placed him gently in the passenger seat and buckled him in safely.

The engine sputtered in protest before finally roaring to life.

We drove out of the city, leaving the bright lights and the terrible memories behind us.

The storm worsened, throwing sheets of heavy rain against the windshield.

I glanced over at Noah, who was staring out the window with a look of sheer exhaustion.

"We are going to be okay," I promised him.

He nodded slowly, his eyes heavy, and finally drifted off to sleep.

I drove for two hours, heading toward a small town where nobody knew my name.

Suddenly, my cell phone buzzed loudly in the cup holder.

I glanced at the screen and saw an unknown number calling me in the middle of the night.

I ignored it, keeping my eyes fixed on the slick highway.

The phone rang again, relentless and terrifying in the quiet car.

Against my better judgment, I answered it on speakerphone.

"Did you really think it would be that easy, Sarah?" a voice asked.

It was Michael.

My breath caught in my throat, and I almost swerved off the wet road.

"How did you get this number?" I demanded.

Michael let out a dark, menacing laugh that echoed through the speaker.

"I own the telecommunications company that provides your cell service," he mocked.

"But that is not how I found you tonight."

I looked over at my sleeping son, a sudden wave of pure dread washing over me.

May you like

"Did you really think I would let my heir walk around without a tracking device?" Michael whispered.

"I am five miles behind you, Sarah, and I am catching up fast."
