Chapter 2 - The Knock at the Door

I quickly scooped Noah into my arms and carried him into the dark X-ray room at the back of the clinic.

I locked the heavy lead-lined door and told him to stay perfectly quiet.

The front door of the clinic burst open, slamming against the wall with a deafening crack.

I walked out to the reception area, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Standing in the doorway was Michael Hayes, dripping wet and wearing a tailored suit that cost more than my entire medical practice.

He looked exactly the same as he did five years ago, arrogant and completely devoid of empathy.

"Sarah," he said smoothly, his cold eyes scanning the empty waiting room.

"It has been a long time."

I crossed my arms to hide my trembling hands.

"We are closed, Michael."

He stepped further into the room, his expensive shoes leaving muddy footprints on my clean floor.

"I am looking for a little runaway street rat," he sneered.

"My useless son decided to climb out his bedroom window tonight."

I forced my face to remain completely blank.

"No one has been here for hours."

Michael stepped closer, invading my personal space until I could smell his expensive cologne.

"If I find out you are lying to me, Sarah, I will have your medical license revoked and this pathetic clinic bulldozed."

He stared at me for a long moment, trying to read my expression.

Finding nothing, he turned around and walked back out into the pouring rain.

I waited until his taillights disappeared down the street before rushing back to the X-ray room.

I unlocked the door and found Noah curled into a tiny ball under a lead apron.

I knelt beside him and gently pulled the apron away.

"He is gone, Noah," I whispered.

Noah looked up at me with tears streaming down his bruised cheeks.

"My dad did not break my leg," Noah confessed softly.

I froze, completely caught off guard by his words.

"Then who did?" I asked.

Noah looked at the floor, his small hands shaking uncontrollably.

"My stepmother, Victoria," he whispered.

"She pushed me down the stairs because I dropped her favorite glass."

May you like

My blood ran entirely cold.

"She said if I ever told anyone, she would make me disappear forever tonight."
