Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

Six months later, the terrifying nightmare was finally a thing of the past.

I was granted full, undisputed legal custody of Noah, and the courts issued permanent restraining orders against the Hayes family.

Michael, Victoria, and Eleanor were all convicted on multiple felony charges and sentenced to decades in federal prison.

My small neighborhood clinic received a massive surge in public donations, allowing me to hire three new nurses and expand our services.

Noah's broken leg had healed perfectly, and he no longer flinched when someone reached out to hand him a toy.

We moved into a bright, safe house in a quiet suburban neighborhood with a big backyard for him to play in.

That evening, we sat at the kitchen table eating dinner together without any fear of spilling water or dropping a plate.

He laughed loudly at a joke I told, a beautiful sound that brought endless joy to my soul.

Later that night, I carried him upstairs and tucked him into his warm, comfortable bed.

I kissed his forehead, deeply grateful for the true peace we had finally found.

I closed his bedroom door softly and walked downstairs to the kitchen to turn off the remaining lights.

Sitting perfectly centered on the clean granite counter was a blank, white envelope.

My heart skipped a beat, because I knew for a fact that the counter had been completely empty five minutes ago.

I slowly opened the envelope and pulled out a single, glossy photograph.

It was a picture of Noah sleeping peacefully in his new bed, taken from inside the room just moments ago.

Written on the back of the photograph in dark red ink was a single, terrifying sentence.

"You thought prison could stop the Hayes family, but we are just getting started."
