Chapter 7 - The Blackout

The EMP grenade detonated with a blinding flash of blue light and a high-pitched, screeching whine.
Every single electronic device in the room was instantly fried.
The mercenaries' laser sights vanished, their night vision goggles short-circuited, and the skyscraper's main power grid completely failed.
The room was plunged into absolute, terrifying darkness.
"Kill them blindly!" Richard roared from the back of the room, his voice filled with genuine panic.
Alejandro did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.
He grabbed Elena's hand and sprinted toward the shattered glass window overlooking the city.
The mercenaries fired wildly into the darkness, the muzzle flashes illuminating the chaotic room in brief, terrifying bursts.
A stray bullet grazed Alejandro's shoulder, tearing through his tactical vest and burning his skin.
He ignored the searing pain and kicked the remaining glass out of the massive window frame.
Eighty stories below, the city streets looked like tiny, glowing ribbons.
"We have to jump," Alejandro yelled over the deafening gunfire.
Elena looked over the terrifying edge, her eyes wide with sheer terror.
"Are you completely insane?" she screamed.
Alejandro pulled a heavy grappling hook from his belt, securing it tightly to the exposed steel rebar of the window frame.
He wrapped his strong arm securely around her waist and pulled her tightly against his chest.
"Trust me," he whispered right by her ear.
Before the mercenaries could reload their weapons, Alejandro leaped out into the freezing night air.
They plummeted down the side of the towering skyscraper at a terrifying speed.
The wind roared violently in their ears as the ground rushed up to meet them.
Alejandro squeezed the brake on the grappling line, jerking them to a painful, sudden halt ten stories below.
They swung hard and crashed through the glass window of an empty corporate office.
They rolled onto the carpeted floor, bruised, bleeding, and gasping for air.
Alejandro struggled to his feet, checking Elena to make sure she was not severely injured.
"We survived," Elena breathed out, a hysterical laugh escaping her lips.
Suddenly, the heavy wooden doors of the office burst open.

David, Alejandro's treacherous mentor, walked in holding a heavy shotgun, looking incredibly nervous.
"I knew you would try the lower floors, kid," David sneered, aiming the weapon at Alejandro's head.
