Chapter 2 - The Escape

Dora's heart slammed violently against her ribcage.
She looked toward the massive oak double doors of the ballroom.
Two men in heavy tactical gear were chaining the brass handles shut from the outside.
Screams erupted from the wealthy guests as the reality of the situation finally set in.
Victor didn't waste a single second watching the panic unfold.
He grabbed Dora's hand tightly and pulled her toward the kitchen swinging doors.
Jessica lunged forward, desperately grabbing onto Victor's suit jacket.
"Please take me with you, Arthur left me behind!" Jessica sobbed hysterically.
Victor smoothly peeled her perfectly manicured fingers off his expensive wool lapel.
"You should have learned to clean up your own messes," Victor said coldly.
He pushed through the kitchen doors, dragging Dora into the chaotic stainless steel prep area.
Chefs and line cooks were already scrambling toward the loading dock exits in sheer terror.
Victor ignored the main exits and led Dora directly toward a massive walk-in freezer.
"We are going to freeze in there," Dora warned him breathlessly.
Victor simply smiled, punching a rapid code into the digital thermostat on the wall.
The heavy metal shelves inside the freezer suddenly slid sideways with a mechanical hiss.
A hidden elevator stood waiting behind the frozen carcasses of beef.
Dora stared in absolute shock as Victor ushered her into the secret compartment.
"You own the Aster Hotel?" Dora asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"I own half of Boston, Dora," Victor replied as the doors slid shut.
The elevator began to plummet downward at a stomach-churning speed.
Victor pulled a heavy, matte black handgun from a hidden shoulder holster beneath his tuxedo.
He quickly checked the magazine, his face a mask of absolute, lethal concentration.
Dora suddenly realized the man she had saved was far more dangerous than she ever imagined.
The elevator abruptly ground to a violent, screeching halt halfway down the shaft.
The emergency red lights flickered on, casting a bloody glow over Victor's face.
Smoke began to rapidly fill the small, enclosed space.

"They just blew the primary support cables," Victor stated grimly.
The metal box violently lurched downward again, dropping them into absolute darkness.
