Chapter 9 - The Heist

Harper dropped the phone.
The screen shattered against the floorboard of the SUV.
“You lied to me,” she screamed, hitting Roman’s shoulder.
“You said she was safe!”
Roman swerved the car into a dark industrial park and slammed on the brakes.
He grabbed both of her wrists, pinning them against the dashboard.
“I did not lie,” he said fiercely.
“They ambushed my extraction team.”
“I just lost four good men, so contain your hysteria.”
Harper sobbed, struggling against his grip.
“They’re going to kill her.”
“Davis wants the money,” Roman stated, releasing her hands.
“He knows you are the only one who can bypass the firm’s security protocols.”
“He needs you to move the funds before the feds freeze the accounts.”
Harper wiped her eyes, her mind racing.
“I can do it,” she said desperately.
“I can log in from anywhere and initiate the transfer.”
“But the final authorization requires a physical biometric key.”
Roman narrowed his eyes.
“A thumb drive?”
“Yes, an encrypted drive linked to my fingerprint,” Harper explained.
“Where is it?” Roman demanded.
Harper felt a sickening wave of despair wash over her.
“Derek has it.”
“He took it from my purse at the restaurant to ensure I couldn’t leave the state without him.”
Roman turned the steering wheel sharply, accelerating back onto the main road.
“My men took Derek to a warehouse in Queens,” Roman said.
“He is tied to a chair.”
Harper looked at his sharp, merciless profile in the dashboard lights.
“Will you help me save her?” she asked.
“I want that money, Harper.”
“If saving your sister gets me the money, then she lives.”

He pushed the car past ninety miles an hour.
“But if Derek disposed of that drive, she is already dead.”
