Chapter 6 - The Siege

Harper felt the room spin.
The Falco family was a ghost story whispered in the financial district.
They were notorious for untraceable murders and hostile takeovers that left boardrooms bathed in blood.
“You’re a mobster,” Harper whispered.
“I am an opportunist,” Roman corrected smoothly.
He walked over to a wet bar and poured two glasses of water.
“The Vargas cartel encroached on my territory.”
“I am simply taking their retirement fund as compensation.”
He held out a glass to Chloe, but she refused to take it.
“You’re using my sister to steal dirty money,” Chloe spat.
“I am keeping your sister breathing,” Roman countered sharply.
The calm authority in his voice chilled Harper to the bone.
Before anyone could say another word, the penthouse shuddered.
A deafening explosion echoed from the floor below them.
The floor-to-ceiling windows rattled violently.
Alarms began shrieking through the building.
Roman dropped the water glasses.
They shattered into a hundred pieces on the marble floor.
He pulled a heavy black pistol from the holster beneath his jacket.
“They tracked Derek’s phone before my men tossed it,” Roman growled.
The giant guard burst into the room, holding an assault rifle.
“Boss, they breached the service elevator,” the guard shouted.
“We have heavily armed hostiles on the thirty-ninth floor.”
Roman grabbed Harper by the arm, pulling her toward the door.
“Stay behind me,” he ordered.
“What about Chloe?” Harper screamed over the blaring alarms.
“Leo will take her down the fire escape,” Roman said, gesturing to the giant.
Smoke began to filter through the air vents.
The smell of burning plastic and cordite filled the corridor.
Gunfire erupted from the lobby.
Roman pushed Harper against the wall.
“Do not let go of my belt,” he told her.

The heavy steel door to the stairwell swung open.
Three men in tactical gear stepped out, leveling their weapons right at them.
