Chapter 7 - The Descent

Roman did not hesitate.

He raised his weapon and fired three rapid shots.

The men in the doorway dropped instantly.

Harper screamed, covering her ears to block out the deafening noise.

“Move!” Roman roared, grabbing her hand and pulling her into the concrete stairwell.

They began sprinting down the concrete steps.

The heat from the lower floors was rising rapidly.

Harper’s expensive heels slipped on the stairs.

She kicked them off and continued running barefoot.

Gunfire echoed up the shaft, creating a terrifying cacophony of violence.

“Where is my sister?” Harper shouted.

“Leo took her to the secondary extraction point,” Roman yelled back.

They reached the thirtieth floor.

Roman kicked the door open and dragged her into a dark, unfinished office space.

Dust covered the plastic tarps hanging from the ceiling.

“We need to cross to the freight elevator,” Roman whispered.

He reloaded his pistol with terrifying efficiency.

Harper huddled behind a concrete pillar, struggling to breathe.

She watched this brutal, elegant man transform into a ruthless killer.

Suddenly, a flashlight beam cut through the darkness.

“Falco is in here!” a voice shouted.

Bullets tore through the drywall above Harper’s head.

Roman returned fire, dropping two more attackers in the gloom.

He grabbed her hand again, pulling her toward the freight corridor.

They reached the heavy metal doors of the service elevator.

Standing in front of it was one of Roman’s own security guards.

“Thank God,” Harper sobbed.

Roman stopped abruptly.

He did not lower his weapon.

The guard slowly raised a shotgun, aiming it directly at Roman’s chest.

“Vargas pays better, boss,” the guard sneered.

He pulled the trigger.
