Chapter 6 - A Dangerous Promotion

Julian stared at her in deafening, suffocating silence, evaluating every single micro-expression on her pale, composed face.
The tension in the lavish room was incredibly thick, heavy with unspoken threats and Julian's calculated paranoia.
Suddenly, Julian broke the tense silence with a dark, humorless chuckle that sent a terrifying chill down Evelyn's spine.
He leaned forward aggressively, telling her that he deeply admired her incredible ability to lie straight to his face without trembling.
He revealed that he had thoroughly checked the security logs, knowing perfectly well that she did not enter the penthouse through the front door.
Evelyn braced herself physically, waiting for his armed security team to burst into the room and drag her away to an unmarked grave.
Instead, Julian calmly opened his top desk drawer and pulled out a heavy, gold-plated executive access keycard.
He slid it smoothly across the mahogany desk toward her, a sinister, knowing smile playing on his lips.
He explained that his current Executive Vice President had become a massive liability, showing unforgivable signs of moral weakness regarding their operations.
Julian announced that he was promoting Evelyn to the powerful position immediately, noting that he always preferred to keep his most capable enemies incredibly close.
He explicitly ordered her to personally oversee the waterfront expansion, essentially commanding her to finalize the very crimes she was being framed for.
Evelyn carefully picked up the gold keycard, thanking him for the monumental opportunity with a perfectly forced, gracious smile.
Julian stood up slowly and pointed to an advanced biometric scanner permanently mounted on the wall near the office door.
He informed her that the new promotion required a fresh retinal and fingerprint scan to officially register her elevated executive clearance.

Evelyn felt her stomach completely drop, knowing the scanner would instantly flag her thumbprint as the one used in the unauthorized breach of his safe.
Julian watched her closely, his eyes narrowing as he gestured for her to place her hand flat on the glowing glass panel.
