I stared at the tablet, watching the digital numbers drain entirely to zero.
General Vance and Arthur were both in federal custody, meaning neither of them could have initiated the transfer.
I turned my attention to Brooke, who was still kneeling on the ground with her hands raised.

Arthur laughed weakly from the concrete, his face bruised and covered in dirt.
He mocked me, claiming that even with all my military power, I was still completely clueless.
He revealed that his mother, Victoria, had always been the true mastermind behind the family's finances.
Victoria had discovered the illegal loan documents in Arthur's desk weeks ago.
Instead of stopping him, she had secretly copied the account information for herself.
She intended to steal the two million dollars, abandon her bankrupt husband, and flee to Europe.
I immediately contacted the state police and ordered them to lock down the Vance estate.
The dispatcher returned my call minutes later with infuriating news.
Victoria Vance had completely vanished from the property, taking all of her expensive jewelry and passports.
The local authorities had tracked her luxury sedan heading directly toward the international airport.
I requested a tactical airlift from the Army Rangers to intercept her before she could board a flight.
I secured my twins in the armored transport vehicle, refusing to let them out of my sight again.
As the helicopter lifted off into the night sky, my tablet beeped with a sudden proximity alert.
