Chapter 6 - The Sniper's Mark

Arthur froze completely as the bright red laser sight rested between his eyes.

He slowly looked around the abandoned shipping yard in absolute terror.

I had not called for backup, which meant a third party was currently operating in the shadows.

A loud, heavily distorted voice echoed from a hidden megaphone above us.

The voice ordered everyone to drop their weapons and step away from the children.

Arthur panicked, tightening his grip on the explosive detonator.

He screamed that he was going to blow up the vehicle if the sniper did not back down.

Brooke suddenly realized that Arthur was entirely willing to sacrifice her and the babies.

She placed the car seats gently on the concrete and slowly backed away from the rigged SUV.

Arthur cursed at her and reached out to grab her arm.

The sniper immediately fired a single, silenced shot.

The high-caliber bullet shattered the remote detonator right out of Arthur's hand.

Arthur screamed in pain, clutching his bleeding fingers as the plastic device shattered into useless pieces.

I sprinted forward, tackling Arthur to the hard concrete before he could recover.

I pinned him down and secured his arms behind his back using a heavy zip-tie from my tactical vest.

I rushed over to the infant carriers and fell to my knees, weeping with relief.

Leo and Chloe were both fast asleep, completely unaware of the terrifying violence around them.

Brooke raised her hands in surrender, sobbing and begging for mercy.

Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of a nearby warehouse groaned open.

A team of men dressed in entirely unmarked black tactical gear stepped out into the fading light.

The leader removed his mask, revealing the face of the federal detective from the lawn.

He looked at me with a cold smile and stated that the babies were now property of the United States Government.
