Chapter 4 - The Silent Alarm

I stared down the barrel of the general's weapon without even blinking.
My years of overseas combat training immediately kicked in.
I knew he could not shoot me in a military holding cell without a flawless cover story.
General Vance coldly explained that he was going to report I had tried to violently escape custody.
He stepped closer, moving into the blind spot of the room's security camera.
Before he could pull the trigger, the entire base was suddenly plunged into absolute darkness.
The deafening sound of the base's emergency siren echoed through the concrete walls.
My cyber-warfare team had successfully triggered a base-wide security lockdown from Fort Meade.
In the pitch black, I lunged forward and grabbed the general's wrist.
I twisted his arm violently, forcing him to drop the heavy pistol to the floor.
I delivered a swift strike to his knee, sending him crashing onto the cold tiles.
I grabbed his discarded weapon and secured his magnetic keycard from his uniform.
The emergency red backup lights flickered on, painting the room in an eerie glow.
General Vance groaned in pain and cursed my name.
I stepped over him, swiped the keycard, and rushed out into the chaotic hallway.
Soldiers were running in every direction, trying to secure the perimeter of the base.
I needed to get to the civilian hospital immediately.
Arthur knew I was locked up, which meant my newborn twins were completely unprotected.
I hijacked a parked military transport vehicle and smashed through the secondary security gates.
I drove recklessly down the highway, praying I was not too late to save Leo and Chloe.

When I finally reached the maternity ward, I found the door to the nursery completely shattered.
Two nurses were crying on the floor, and the transparent bassinets holding my babies were entirely empty.
