Chapter 2 - The Lockdown

The police officer immediately reached for his radio to call for backup.

"We need a full hospital lockdown right now," the officer shouted into the microphone.

Sirens began to wail outside the building, flashing red and blue lights through the hospital window.

I fell to my knees, clutching my stomach as a fresh wave of agony washed over me.

They had not only killed my precious newborn, but they had also stolen his tiny body.

Daniel stood completely still in the center of the room, looking strangely calm for a father who had just lost a child.

"Sarah is clearly having a mental breakdown," Daniel told the police officer smoothly.

"She probably hid the body herself in a fit of postpartum psychosis," he added without blinking.

I stared at the man I had loved for ten years, feeling like I was looking at a complete stranger.

"You are a monster," I whispered through my tears.

Noah hugged my neck tightly, crying quietly into my hospital gown.

"Mommy didn't do it, Daddy did," Noah suddenly said to the entire room.

Every single pair of eyes turned to stare at my brave eight-year-old boy.

"Daddy was talking on his phone in the hallway about a special delivery," Noah explained innocently.

Daniel took a threatening step toward his own son.

"Shut your mouth, you stupid boy," Daniel snapped viciously.

The police officer immediately placed a heavy hand on Daniel's chest, shoving him backward.

"Turn around and put your hands behind your back, sir," the officer commanded.

Daniel cursed loudly as the metal cuffs clicked around his wrists.

Claire tried to slip quietly out the open hospital door while everyone was distracted.

"Stop that woman," the nurse yelled, pointing directly at my sister-in-law.

Two security guards tackled Claire to the floor before she could reach the elevator banks.

I stood up slowly, a cold and dangerous fury replacing the crushing grief in my chest.

My baby was gone, but my husband and his family were going to pay for this.

The doctor rushed back into the room holding a tablet computer in his trembling hands.

"I just checked the security footage from the maternity ward hallway," the doctor said breathlessly.

He turned the screen around so the police officer and I could see the video.

The footage showed a man in scrubs pushing a medical cart down the service corridor.

But when the man looked up at the camera, my blood ran completely cold.

"That is not a hospital employee," the doctor confirmed with wide eyes.

The man in the video was wearing a medical mask, but he had a very distinct spider tattoo on his neck.

I recognized that awful tattoo instantly.

"That is my husband's private accountant," I gasped in shock.
