Chapter 5 - Fire and Rain

Vanessa smiled a deeply wicked, completely victorious smile as she held the flickering flame dangerously close to the gasoline.
"You are incredibly resourceful, David, I will absolutely give you credit for that," she taunted coldly.
David kept his body firmly positioned between his daughter and the dangerous, heavily armed woman.
He aimed the stolen pistol directly at her chest, his hands shaking slightly from the massive adrenaline rush.
"If you drop that lighter, the explosion will absolutely kill you too," David warned with a fierce, unwavering tone.
Vanessa simply laughed, revealing a thick, fireproof survival blanket draped casually over her shoulder.
"I plan to roll safely under the heavy steel door just as the fumes ignite," she explained methodically.
She tossed the burning silver lighter directly into the center of the massive puddle of highly volatile fuel.
The entire garage instantly erupted into a blinding, roaring wall of intense orange flames.
The incredible heat physically pushed David backward, forcing him to shield Sophie's face from the searing fire.
Vanessa immediately dove onto the ground, desperately trying to roll under the closing garage door as planned.
However, the intense explosion warped the heavy metal tracks, completely jamming the door halfway down.
She screamed in pure panic as she realized she was now trapped inside the burning room with them.
David did not waste a single second watching his wicked wife struggle against her own deadly trap.
He remembered a small, hidden maintenance hatch located behind the massive tool cabinets against the back wall.
He sprinted through the thick, choking black smoke, coughing violently as he kicked the heavy cabinets aside.
He ripped the metal hatch open and shoved Sophie safely into the dark, narrow tunnel leading outside.
He squeezed his broad shoulders through the tight opening just as a secondary vehicle explosion rocked the garage.
They tumbled out of the hatch and landed heavily onto the wet, muddy grass behind the massive estate.
A violent, freezing rainstorm was raging outside, quickly soaking them both to the absolute bone.
David picked Sophie up and began sprinting desperately toward the incredibly dense, dark woods bordering the property.
He knew they had to find the main highway several miles away to flag down a passing motorist for help.
Suddenly, the deep, terrifying sound of aggressive barking echoed loudly over the booming thunder.

David looked back through the pouring rain and saw the silhouettes of two massive search dogs straining on heavy leashes.
Vanessa had not just brought a corrupt lawyer to the estate; she had brought a professional, highly lethal tracker.
