Chapter 4 - The Ransom

I stared in absolute shock as the federal agents quickly surrounded my hospital bed.

The local deputy looked completely bewildered, stepping back with his hands raised in surrender.

The corrupt doctor scrambled against the wall, his face pale with sudden, undeniable terror.

"You have no jurisdiction here!" the deputy stammered weakly, trying to regain control of the situation.

The lead FBI agent ignored him entirely, gesturing for two of his men to unlock my hospital bed.

"Your father called in every favor he had in Washington to get us here, Sarah," the agent whispered to me.

They rolled me rapidly out of the emergency room, bypassing the confused medical staff and hospital security.

A heavily armored black SUV was waiting at the ambulance bay with its engine roaring.

They carefully loaded me into the back of the vehicle, the plush leather offering little comfort for my throbbing leg.

As the SUV sped away into the dark city streets, I finally allowed myself to breathe.

"Where is Emma?" I demanded immediately, grabbing the sleeve of the agent sitting next to me.

The agent's face hardened, and he avoided making direct eye contact with me.

"Your father’s private security team breached your house ten minutes ago," he explained quietly.

"David and Margaret were already gone, and the house was completely emptied of all your personal documents."

A cold wave of pure dread washed over my entire body.

"And my daughter?" I asked again, my voice cracking with rising panic.

The agent handed me a secure tablet that was displaying a paused video file.

"This was emailed to your father's private server just before we arrived at the hospital," the agent said grimly.

I tapped the screen with a trembling finger and watched the horrifying footage play.

Emma was sitting on a dirty mattress in a dark, concrete basement, clutching her favorite stuffed bear.

She looked absolutely terrified, her tear-stained face staring directly into the camera lens.

A distorted, heavily disguised voice echoed from behind the camera.

"Sarah has hidden the estate documents, and we want them signed and delivered by dawn."

The voice was not David's, and it was certainly not Margaret's.

"If the trust is not legally transferred to our specified accounts, you will never see this child again."

I dropped the tablet onto the seat, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

David hadn't just stolen my inheritance; he had involved someone far more dangerous.

"Who took her?" I asked the agent, feeling a murderous rage replacing my fear.

"We just traced the IP address of the email," the agent replied, looking deeply troubled.

"The video was sent from inside your father's own highly secured corporate headquarters."
