Chapter 1 - The Voice on the Line

"I heard everything, David," my father’s voice echoed through the cold kitchen.

His tone was completely devoid of panic.

It carried the terrifying calm of a man who knew exactly how to destroy an enemy.

David froze completely in place, his fingers still wrapped painfully tight around my wrist.

The arrogant sneer on his face vanished in a single heartbeat.

It was replaced by a pale, genuine terror that I had never seen before.

He stared at the speakerphone as if it were a venomous snake preparing to strike.

Margaret lowered her wineglass slowly.

The ice clinked loudly in the sudden, suffocating quiet of the room.

Without thinking, David lunged across the marble floor and snatched the device.

He violently smashed the phone against the hard edge of the island counter.

The screen shattered into a spiderweb of glowing glass.

The call abruptly disconnected, leaving us in silence once again.

"What did you tell him?" David hissed, his chest heaving as he turned back to me.

I clenched my jaw against the blinding pain shooting up from my broken leg.

"I didn't have to tell him anything," I whispered, keeping my eyes locked on his.

Emma remained frozen on the stairs, her small hands clutching her pink pajamas in sheer terror.

Margaret rushed forward, her pearls swinging wildly as she grabbed her son by the shoulders.

"We have to control the narrative right now," Margaret commanded, her voice shaking with calculated urgency.

She looked down at me with absolute disgust before turning her attention back to David.

"Take the heavy iron poker from the fireplace and hit yourself in the ribs," she instructed him coldly.

David hesitated for only a fraction of a second before nodding in agreement.

He ran to the living room, and a sickening thud echoed through the house as he struck himself.

I tried to drag my broken body toward the stairs to shield my daughter, but the agony was paralyzing.

Margaret pulled out her own cell phone and dialed 911, immediately forcing fake tears into her eyes.

"Please help us, my daughter-in-law has gone completely insane!" Margaret cried into the receiver.

She spun a masterful web of lies, claiming I had attacked David in a psychotic rage over money.

Through the front window, I saw the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the neighborhood houses.

They had arrived suspiciously fast, far too quickly for a standard emergency dispatch.

The heavy oak front door burst open before anyone even had a chance to unlock it.

Three uniformed police officers stormed into the foyer with their hands resting on their weapons.

My heart sank into my stomach as the lead officer stepped into the bright kitchen light.

He was wearing a familiar, cruel smirk that mirrored my husband's perfectly.

It was David’s older brother, Officer Thomas Miller.
