Chapter 14 - The Phantom Menace

I left the prison feeling as though the solid ground beneath my feet had completely vanished into thin air.

The sprawling empire that had protected me, the wealth that had secured Emma's future, was all built on a foundation of unimaginable suffering.

I returned to the beach house to find my father sitting in the living room, playing a board game with Emma.

He looked like the perfect, loving grandfather, his eyes crinkling with genuine joy as Emma laughed at his jokes.

It took every ounce of my willpower not to scream at him, to not shatter the beautiful illusion right in front of my daughter.

I excused myself to the kitchen, pouring a glass of ice water with hands that refused to stop shaking.

As I stared out the kitchen window toward the dark, rolling ocean, my encrypted cell phone vibrated violently in my pocket.

It was an unknown international number, completely bypassing my father's state-of-the-art security firewalls.

I answered it, pressing the phone tightly to my ear while watching my father in the next room.

"He looks so natural holding her, doesn't he?" a woman's voice whispered softly through the speaker.

My blood ran absolutely cold.

"Who is this?" I demanded, though the terrifying truth was already clawing at the edges of my mind.

"I am the ghost he tried to bury, Sarah," Victoria replied, her tone chillingly calm and sophisticated.

She told me to look out the kitchen window, past the private security guards standing near the shoreline.

Standing on the edge of the public pier, barely illuminated by the moonlight, was a solitary figure holding a black umbrella.

"He stole my life, he stole my daughter, and he built a kingdom on my shattered mind," Victoria said quietly.

"I am giving you exactly forty-eight hours to transfer the entire Sterling Trust back into my name."

I watched the figure on the pier slowly raise a hand and wave at me through the darkness.

"If you refuse, or if you tell Arthur about this conversation, I will not hesitate to take what is mine by force."

Before I could respond, the line went dead, leaving nothing but the sound of static echoing in my ear.

I looked back into the living room, watching my father smile as he handed Emma a small toy.

I was trapped between a ruthless father who had lied to me my entire life, and a vengeful mother who was ready to destroy us all.
