Chapter 18 - The Counter-Strike

The air inside the bunker was growing noticeably thin, making every breath feel heavy and agonizingly hot.

Emma had fallen into a deep, lethargic sleep, her small chest rising and falling with concerning shallowness.

I strapped a heavy tactical vest over my sweater, securing two extra magazines of ammunition into the pouches.

If Thomas and Marcus couldn't dig us out in time, I was going to use the emergency explosive charges to blow the bunker doors myself.

Just as I reached for the blasting caps, a faint, rhythmic tapping echoed through the thick steel of the main door.

It was a tactical Morse code sequence, the exact distress signal Thomas had taught me to recognize during our security planning.

I rushed to the manual override wheel, throwing my entire body weight into spinning the heavy metal mechanism.

The hydraulic locks hissed in protest, struggling against the massive weight of the collapsed rubble on the other side.

With a grinding screech, the doors cracked open just enough to let a blinding beam of flashlight cut through the darkness.

Thomas and Marcus stood in the narrow, dusty tunnel they had managed to clear through the debris.

They were both covered in ash and blood, looking utterly exhausted but heavily armed.

"Grab Emma, we only have a tiny window before Victoria's rearguard circles back," Thomas commanded, reaching through the gap.

I lifted my sleeping daughter, passing her carefully into Thomas's strong, protective arms.

I squeezed through the narrow opening, my lungs burning as I finally inhaled the cool, smoky ocean air.

"Where is my father?" I asked immediately, gripping my pistol tightly as we navigated the treacherous ruins of the basement.

Marcus looked away, his jaw tightening with regret as he reloaded his rifle.

"Arthur held the stairs long enough for us to flank the assault team, but he took three rounds to the chest," Marcus explained softly.

Tears blurred my vision, but I forced them back, knowing I could not afford to mourn him right now.

He had lied to me, manipulated me, and built a kingdom on blood, but in the end, he died a hero to save his granddaughter.

"Victoria set up a mobile command center at the old lighthouse down the coast to watch the house burn," Thomas whispered, checking the perimeter.

"We have an extraction boat waiting, Sarah, we can disappear tonight and never look back."

I looked down at Emma, knowing that running would only delay the inevitable confrontation.

Victoria would hunt us to the ends of the earth, relentlessly destroying everything in her path until she finished her twisted mission.

I chambered a round into my pistol, feeling a cold, inherited ruthlessness finally taking complete control of my spirit.

"No more running," I declared, my voice echoing with the exact same terrifying authority my father used to possess.

"We are going to the lighthouse, and we are going to end this tonight."
