Chapter 8 - The Father's Choice

I froze on the floor, clutching the documents tightly to my chest.

I slowly looked up, fully expecting my mother to be standing there with a weapon.

Instead, my father was standing in the doorway.

He looked tired, broken, and completely defeated by the life he had chosen.

“I forgot my wallet for the dinner,” he whispered, staring at the open safe.

I waited for him to yell, to grab me, to call my mother and turn me in.

He slowly walked into the room and looked at the life insurance policy in my hand.

He let out a long, heavy sigh that seemed to carry twenty years of regret.

“She is planning to have you killed tonight, Joanna,” he said in a trembling voice.

I stared at him, absolutely horrified that he knew about her murderous plans.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the keys to his heavy-duty pickup truck.

“I have been a coward my entire life, but I will not let her kill my daughter,” he said, handing me the keys.

He told me to take his truck because my mother had already sent men to look for my rental car.

I hugged him for the first time in ten years, feeling tears stream down my face.

I ran down the stairs, jumped into the heavy truck, and sped away from the house.

I merged onto the dark interstate, desperate to reach the airport and fly back to California.

I checked the rearview mirror and saw a massive black SUV racing up fast behind me.

Before I could change lanes, the SUV violently rammed into the back of my truck.
