Chapter 6 - The Forgery

I drove straight to Jessica's office, carrying my laptop and a profound sense of desperation.
Jessica reviewed the foreclosure notice with a grim and serious expression on her face.
“The syndicate used a power of attorney document to place this lien on your house,” she explained.
“I never signed a power of attorney for anyone,” I practically shouted.
Jessica pulled up a digital copy of the document that the syndicate had filed with the county.
There was a signature at the bottom of the page that looked exactly like my handwriting.
“Your mother forged this five years ago and had a corrupt notary stamp it,” Jessica concluded.
She told me that digital copies were not enough to definitively prove forgery in a federal court.
We needed the original, physical document to test the ink and prove it was a traced signature.
“Where would she keep the original document?” Jessica asked.
I thought about my childhood home and the secrets my mother guarded so fiercely.
“She has a fireproof safe hidden under the floorboards in her master bedroom,” I realized.
Jessica warned me that getting a federal warrant for that safe would take at least three weeks.
I looked at the foreclosure notice sitting on the desk.
I didn't have three weeks to wait for the legal system to save me.
I booked a flight to Phoenix for that exact same evening.
I knew my family would be attending the fake wedding rehearsal dinner at a fancy restaurant tonight.

Their house would be completely empty for at least three hours.
I was going to break into my mother's home and steal back my own life.
