Chapter 5 - The Foreclosure

“Step away from my computer,” I said, flipping on the harsh kitchen lights.
Beth jumped, accidentally knocking her glass of water onto the floor.
She quickly pulled the flash drive from the laptop and shoved it into her pocket.
“I was just checking my email,” she lied, forcing a pathetic smile.
“You are exactly like her,” I stated, feeling absolute disgust for my own sister.
I demanded that she pack her things and get out of my house immediately.
Beth dropped the innocent victim act and glared at me with pure venom.
“You really don't understand what is happening here, do you?” she sneered.
She explained that our mother owed millions to a violent criminal syndicate based in Phoenix.
“If you don't take the fall for this debt, they are going to kill all of us,” Beth revealed calmly.
“I am not sacrificing my life for your mistakes,” I replied, opening the front door.
Beth walked out into the cool morning air, turning back to look at me one last time.
“They are going to take your precious house anyway, Joanna.”
I slammed the door and locked it, completely refusing to be intimidated by her empty threats.
At nine o'clock in the morning, my cell phone rang with an incoming call from my mortgage lender.
I answered it, expecting a routine question about my recent closing documents.
“Miss Simpson, we are calling to inform you of an emergency foreclosure proceeding,” the bank representative said.
I felt the ground shift beneath my feet.
“You missed your first payment, and a massive secondary lien has triggered a default clause,” the representative explained.

I was about to lose the only thing I had ever truly owned.
I had exactly forty-eight hours to prove the lien was fraudulent, or the bank would seize my home.
