Chapter 4 - The Blast

Panic surged through my veins as I read the terrifying words on the screen.

I looked down at the heavy, customized wheelchair that I was currently sitting in.

There was no time to call for my loyal guards or search for the explosive device.

I grabbed Emma's arm and threw my entire body weight forward.

We both tumbled hard onto the thick bedroom rug just as a high-pitched beeping sound began.

I wrapped my arms around her and dragged us both safely behind the massive oak dresser.

A deafening explosion ripped through the room, shattering the windows and blowing the doors off their hinges.

Thick black smoke and the terrible smell of burning metal filled the air instantly.

The force of the blast sent shards of metal embedding into the walls where my head had been seconds before.

I coughed violently, brushing heavy debris off Emma to make sure she was still alive.

She groaned and sat up, clutching a bleeding cut on her forehead.

We had survived, but the blast had destroyed my only means of mobility.

I was completely stranded on the floor of my burning bedroom.

Heavy footsteps began echoing down the hallway, rapidly approaching the ruined doorway.

I pulled my sidearm from my waistband and aimed it directly at the smoke-filled entrance.

Two heavily armed men stepped into the room, scanning the wreckage with tactical flashlights.

They were looking for my corpse.

Before I could pull the trigger, Emma grabbed a broken piece of glass and threw it across the room to distract them.

The men spun toward the noise, and I immediately fired two precise shots.

Both assassins collapsed to the floor, but the radio on one of their vests crackled to life.

Luke's voice echoed from the radio, ordering the rest of his men to burn the entire mansion to the ground.
