Chapter 2 - The Confession

I sat in the darkness, staring at the glowing screen of her burner phone.
My chest tightened with a cold, incredibly familiar rage.
I had started to respect this girl, but she was apparently just another rat inside my house.
I gripped the wheels of my custom chair and pulled myself out of the bed.
The metallic click of my gun cocking echoed loudly in the quiet room.
Emma gasped, and her eyes snapped open in sheer panic.
She scrambled backward against the headboard, staring directly at the barrel of my weapon.
I tossed the burner phone onto the mattress right in front of her.
I demanded to know why the man who paralyzed me was texting her about unlocked doors.
Tears immediately streamed down her pale, flushed face.
She swore she had never wanted to hurt me or anyone else in this house.
Marcus had purchased the massive medical debt her mother owed to the care facility.
He threatened to throw her sick mother onto the freezing streets if Emma did not take this night cleaning job.
She confessed that she was supposed to leave the east wing door unlocked tonight for a strike team.
I lowered my weapon slightly, processing her desperate, tearful words.
If Marcus simply wanted me dead, he could have just bombed the estate from the outside.
There was a specific reason he needed a silent assassination team to enter my house undetected.
I asked her who gave her the security bypass codes for the east wing doors.
May you like
Emma wiped her eyes and uttered a name that made my blood run entirely cold.
She told me the codes were given to her by my trusted second-in-command, Luke.
