Chapter 9 - The Audio Playback

I aggressively yanked my arm out of his painful grip.

I stared right into his desperate, angry eyes and simply smiled.

“We will see about that,” I whispered back.

I signaled the venue coordinator, and she immediately guided the confused guests into the reception barn.

Everyone filed inside, murmuring in shock and demanding answers.

Grant followed closely behind me, trying to maintain his composure in front of his family.

Colleen rushed up to him, demanding to know why I was throwing a public tantrum.

A few minutes later, the heavy wooden doors of the barn were closed.

The bright overhead lights inside the reception barn suddenly dimmed.

Nearly one hundred people stood in absolute, uncomfortable silence.

Then, the venue’s massive DJ speakers crackled to life.

Colleen’s recorded voice echoed loudly through the entire room.

“Did she sign the property agreement?”

Gasps erupted from every corner of the barn.

Grant went completely, terrifyingly still.

Before his own recorded answer played, he looked across the room at me.

He finally understood exactly why I had walked down that aisle anyway.

His arrogant, cruel voice filled the room, explaining how he planned to steal my house.

The guests listened in horror as the recording revealed his massive hidden debt.

When the part played where he admitted he hated my children, the room erupted in outrage.

My friends yelled insults at him, and even some of his own family members looked away in deep shame.

Colleen covered her face with her hands, crying fake tears of embarrassment.

The nine-minute recording finally clicked off, leaving a heavy, judgmental silence in its wake.

Grant looked around the room, realizing his reputation was entirely destroyed.

Suddenly, he threw his head back and began to laugh uncontrollably.

It was the unhinged laugh of a man who thought he still held the winning card.

“You think playing a tape changes anything?” Grant shouted over the crowd.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the yellow envelope David had given him.

“She already signed the property agreement yesterday, and the money is already in my private offshore account!” he bragged loudly.
